Award Description
The American Physiological Society (APS) Cardiovascular (CV) Section Research Recognition Award (RRA) recognizes outstanding research by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who present a first-author abstract at the American Physiology Summit.
The CV Section also offers a Steven M. Horvath RRAs to the top ranked applicant from an underrepresented racial or ethnic background.
Eligibility
The applicant must:
- be a current APS member
- be a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow/medical resident, and
- submit a first-author abstract to the American Physiology Summit
Please note that the applicant may only apply to the APS section to which their abstract was submitted.
Criteria
The application package includes:
- PDF of the abstract,
- the abstract number and first author's full name, sponsor or advisor's full name and sponsors or advisor's email address,
- letter from the applicant and co-signed by the primary research mentor stating their eligibility for the award(s) applied for, contribution to the research, significance of the research contained in the abstract to the field and statement of applicant's research goals
- biosketch (National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).
Letter/statement format:
- 0.8-inch margins
- 11-point font
- single spaced
Award recipients may receive this award once as a graduate student and once as a postdoctoral fellow, regardless of section affiliation. Applicants may apply to as many awards as they are eligible for, however, recipients may only accept one abstract-based award for the American Physiology Summit.
Review Criteria
Applications will be judged on the following:
Abstract
- clearly stated hypothesis or aim,
- technical approach to the study,
- pertinent results obtained with quantitative and statistical comparisons, when appropriate, and
- appropriate conclusion and significance
Other
- letter from the applicant (See elements to include below), and
- Biosketch
