Matthew R. Hodges, PhD, FAPS, is a tenured professor in the Department of Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is an integrative physiologist and neurobiologist focused on understanding mechanisms of cardiorespiratory control in health and disease using omics approaches combined with deep physiological phenotyping in small and large animal models. Hodges’ research team works on characterizing physiological dysfunction during acute opioid overdose and testing novel reversal compounds in goats. The team’s research also defines the altered cellular pathways and function in brainstem circuits governing vital functions following repeated seizures in rat models of epilepsy.

Statement

Since becoming a member of the American Physiological Society (APS) in 2004 as a student, I have enjoyed the many benefits of APS membership that have enabled my career progression. As a result, I have felt a strong magnetism towards service to APS, and particularly to my “home” in the Respiratory Section. My roles have included serving on the Joint Programming and Section Awards committees and as secretary-treasurer of the Respiratory Section. As an educator, I see the value and immense importance of APS in facilitating and instilling foundational physiological knowledge in learners of all ages. As a leader in the community, I see value for scientists to translate significant advances to the public and in advocacy for our discipline. As a scientist, I value the APS as a vehicle for collaboration, networking and recognition for scientific achievement. As a leader, I value the influence APS has in setting a course for the future of our discipline. I will bring to bear my experience, knowledge and my diplomacy and leadership skills in my role as APS Councilor and hope to assist in providing guidance going forward in this next chapter of APS.
