- About APS
My N. Helms, PhD
My N. Helms, PhD, is an associate professor with tenure at the University of Utah. . She earned a doctorate in physiology from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Helms pursues mechanistic studies in epithelial transport biology with a focus on the role of lung epithelial sodium channels in preterm lung injury and redox stress. She collaborates with clinicians and research scientists to deliver hypothesis-driven research findings to benefit human health. Helms mentors the next generation of scientists to become independent investigators and she addresses current scientific challenges and opportunities through American Physiological Society (APS) service. Helms is privileged to be selected as a candidate for Councilor.
Statement
APS has been my academic home since 2001, and has provided me with tremendous scientific, mentoring and service opportunities. These invaluable experiences instilled in me a sense of professional loyalty to the Society and an innate desire to do good for the membership. I understand that the responsibilities of Council include championing new ideas and welcoming diverse perspectives, viewing short- and long-term plans through a strategic lens and facilitating APS growth through engaging with members. I have had a long commitment to APS, serving as a member of the Cell Section Steering Committee and American Journal of Physiology editorial boards. Outside of the APS, I have served on National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense study sections and as a general member (an advisory role to the Board of Directors) of the Telluride Science Research Center in Colorado. These experiences have acquainted me with the procedures, accountability and fiduciary planning necessary to help fulfill APS governance responsibilities. As Councilor, I will promote the core value that APS be a member-driven organization and welcome opportunities to connect with members to discuss needs and concerns across all sections and career stages. My goal as Councilor is to help create meaningful experiences that lead to a profound sense of belonging and ongoing connectivity for all APS members.
