The Department of Medical Physiology in the Texas A&M University College of Medicine has over 15 full-time faculty dedicated to cardiovascular, lymphatic, renal, liver and metabolic disease research. Our internationally recognized faculty receive funding from the National Institutes of Health, NASA, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association and other organizations to support research in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment.

Students will receive excellent mentoring and training in physiology that integrates the department’s expertise in classical and advanced physiological techniques with cutting-edge genomics, imaging and bioinformatics. Our research and training program provides students with a strong physiological basis and the necessary tools to become independent, critically thinking scientists.

Curriculum

Beyond core courses in cell biology, statistics, responsible conduct of research and grant writing, students can take advantage of our highly flexible curriculum that allows instruction to be tailored to the research project interests. Courses across the College of Medicine in the areas of immunoregulation, neuropharmacology and microbial pathogenesis complement the focused Medical Physiology course offerings in cardiovascular and lymphatic physiology and pathobiology.

Graduate Research

Research in the Department of Medical Physiology covers a broad range of topics, including:

  • cardiac and microvascular function;
  • blood flow regulation;
  • lymphatic vessel physiology and lymphatic control of inflammation and immune responses;
  • obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome;
  • aging;
  • heart disease;
  • hypertension;
  • lymphedema;
  • inflammatory bowel disease;
  • kidney and liver injury;
  • retinal dysfunction and
  • cancer.
Tuition, Fees & Financial Support

PhD students receive a fellowship that provides full tuition and fee support and an annual stipend of $30,000 for first- year students. The cost of medical insurance for the student is also covered by the College.
