Graduate Program in Integrative Biology and Physiology
Integrative Biology and Physiology (IBP) is the merging of physiology, which studies the function of living organisms, and the rapidly advancing fields of molecular, genetic, and cellular biology. Research in IBP enables us to understand how the body works, how it adapts to the environment and how it malfunctions in disease.
PhD students at the University of Minnesota Medical School take coursework that provides a broad background in the physiology of membranes, cells, transport and organ systems. Course credits are intended to provide doctoral students the necessary intellectual and professional foundation for their thesis projects and future career, whether it be in research, academia or industry. We encourage students to pursue coursework and available tracks that are in line with their research and future interests. Our Preparing Future Faculty Program and summer internships are some options for students to work on their specific career track.
IBP graduate students are trained to use sophisticated approaches to study molecular, cellular and whole-body functions. Our goal is to better understand how living organisms function and discover new mechanisms of disease.
Students can focus their PhD thesis work in any one of several areas, including:
- cardiovascular biology and disease,
- metabolism and related diseases,
- muscular and respiratory function and disease,
- inflammation in health and disease,
- regenerative medicine,
- neurophysiology,
- aging, and
- cancer.
We provide a solid foundation in physiology and biology, and also the flexibility for students to design a training plan that prepares them for careers in academia, education or the bio-industrial arena.
Students accepted into the IBP PhD program receive an annual stipend of $35,500, fully paid tuition and fees, and single coverage health insurance.
