Learn More About the Programs

MS in Physiology
Our department offers two tracks for the master’s degree. The extremely popular Pre-HealthCare concentration is designed for students who wish to enhance their credentials for professional healthcare programs. Over 80% of the MS graduates who apply for professional programs are accepted.

The Research concentration allows students to: 1) develop competence in directed research for positions in industry, government and academia; 2) effectively teach and communicate with future students; and 3) explore a career as a biomedical scientist.

PhD in Physiology
Our doctoral program is offered through the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville. One major goal of the department is to provide students with advanced training which leads to the PhD in physiology. Our doctoral program is designed primarily to prepare students for a research career in basic and applied physiology.

During the last decade, new and exciting changes have developed in the area of physiology. In addition to a cadre of new investigative techniques, we have seen an explosion of interest in cellular and molecular research into physiological phenomena. The physiology department has successfully blended our traditional systemic research approach with many new cellular and molecular approaches to research. We have developed strong research collaborations with clinical researchers to investigate physiological questions in areas such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Our department has a strong interest in cardiovascular research and collaborates with basic science departments and many clinical departments and subspecialties. The department is located primarily in a modern 14-story research facility on the University of Louisville Health Sciences Campus, a well-integrated facility of both clinical and academic entities.

We are excited about the new and innovative research approaches being explored in our department and in the field of physiology.

Curriculum

Doctoral Program
The department requires a minimum of two consecutive semesters (nine credit hours in the fall or spring semesters and/or six credit hours in the summer) to fulfill the full-time, one-year doctoral residency requirement at the University of Louisville. This is followed by several semesters of research, as defined by the time needed to complete the research goal. By the end of the program, students must demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research.

PhD Course Requirements

Master’s Program
The MS graduate program consists of 30 semester hours taken over a 12-month (three semesters) period to include 18 credit hours of physiology and biochemistry and at least 12 credit hours of electives.

MS Course Requirements

Graduate Research

Our research areas of interest include:

  • cardiopulmonary physiology,
  • cardiovascular disease,
  • cerebrovascular disease,
  • diabetes,
  • drug discovery,
  • hypertension,
  • microvascular control, and
  • renal physiology.
Tuition, Fees & Financial Support

Doctoral Program
The department reviews applications and submit potential candidates for fellowship awards to the Integrated Programs in Biomedical Science (IPIBS) Committee. If selected, the director of the IPIBS will confirm the offer of an IPIBS Fellowship, a. support package consisting of an annual stipend of $28,000 for years 1-2 and $30,00 for the following years, full waiver of tuition and fees and health care benefits. Every student admitted to the PhD program can expect to receive continued financial support for the entire period of graduate study, provided they remain a Kentucky resident and makes satisfactory progress in meeting degree requirements.

Master’s Program (approximate tuition to complete the MS program in 3 semesters)
Kentucky resident: $18,600
Out-of-state: $37,800
