Deadline: January 31
Purpose: To reward an American Physiological Society (APS) chapter member across the national APS-affiliated chapter program who goes above and beyond to serve their chapter.
Award and Recognition: The national winner will receive: $500 and a plaque. Other marketing pieces can be provided for social media, as needed. The national Extra Mile Award winner will be recognized during the American Physiology Summit each year with a mixer or special event and via APS member publications.
Criteria: The applicant or nominator will document a narrative ("Statement of Qualifications") of their contributions to the mission of promoting physiology research, education, outreach, and chapter sustenance within their chapter over the current year, but a sustained contribution to the chapter over several years can be emphasized.
For consideration for the National APS Chapters Extra Mile Award, candidates must meet these prerequisites:
Applicants must document member status (at any membership level) with the chapter and with APS for at least three consecutive years prior to the year of nomination.
- If the applicant had a gap in membership for just cause, they must explain the lapse in membership in the application documentation.
- Members that receive the award are not eligible to apply the following year.
Applicants must be nominated for the award by the chapter’s governing board.
- Chapters may choose their own mechanism for selecting the nominee. We recommend that each chapter award a similar Extra Mile Award at the chapter level, funded and supported by the chapter. We recommend that the criteria for selection be the same or similar to that for the national award.
- Only one individual can be nominated from each chapter each year.
Applicant contributions must be voluntary unpaid service that promotes the discipline of physiology and/or medicine for the chapter.
Applicants or nominators will document in a "Statement of Qualifications" a narrative of contributions to the mission of promoting physiology research, education, outreach, and to leadership and sustenance within the chapter over the current year.
