- About APS
Physiologists in Industry Committee
PURPOSE: The Physiologists in Industry Committee (PIC): (1) ensures that the interests of physiologists who work in industry and corporate settings are represented throughout the Society; and (2) works with staff to provide resources, training and recognition for physiologists who work in industrial or corporate settings, or who wish to work in this setting
MEETINGS: The committee meets twice annually. Meetings may be conducted either in-person or virtually, depending on need. Other work of the committee may be conducted electronically.
The PIC is comprised of a chairperson, as identified by the Committee on Committees, plus a minimum of six members, all currently working in industry settings or with an ongoing relationship with industry or a for-profit business. A member of this committee will be appointed liaison to the Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee and will serve as a nonvoting, ex officio member. The director of education and member communities serves as staff liaison to the committee.
- Working with the Career Opportunities in Physiology and Trainee Advisory Committees, ensure that student and trainee members understand the diversity of career opportunities available to physiologists in industry and corporate environments.
- Promote awareness of the innovation, rigor and process involved in industry science.
- Promote the visibility and participation of physiologists in industry in APS sections and committees.
- Build awareness and understanding of the scientific and interdisciplinary skills necessary to prepare for careers in industry.
- Work with staff to create professional development offerings for physiologists in industry through publications, professional skills training courses, mentoring resources and the development of online interactive materials.
- Work with Council, the Section Advisory Committee, the Committee on Committees and staff to ensure that the interests of physiologists in industry are represented appropriately throughout the organization.
- Select the Translational Research Award recipients.
- Submit a written annual report to Council at their spring meeting, as part of the consent agenda, providing activities from the previous 12 months. The report will be due three weeks ahead of the meeting.
