The Central Nervous System (CNS) Section is a diverse community of scientists of all ages, backgrounds and training. This section is dedicated to fostering education and multidisciplinary research in the study of neuroscience, including the integrative functions of the CNS in the regulation of physiological and pathophysiological functions, from the ion channel and single neuron to global neural networks and whole animal behavior.

Gene Bidwell

"The APS has been a great venue for learning and gaining experience as I have progressed through my career. Serving on the Central Nervous System (CNS) Section Steering Committee as Secretary/Treasurer provided an early opportunity for me to get involved with the Society. I next served as a member of the Animal Care and Experimentation Committee, which was a fantastic and eye-opening experience. That term of service gave me the opportunity to advocate for the importance of humane use of animals in research, and it provided an opportunity to gain experience communicating my science with government policy makers in a manner that is approachable and understandable. Most recently, I am transitioning into the role of Chair of the CNS Section Steering Committee. I'm happy to be leading a section that is very healthy, and I hope to continue to help the section grow. In addition to all the great experiences being a member of APS has provided, perhaps the most important benefit is interacting with the community of people who make up the Society. The APS provides a home and a sense of community for the world's best physiologists. And, while I am not trained as a physiologist myself, I'm happy to have been accepted as a member of this community that has provided great friendships and collaborations throughout my career."
