Award Description
The A. Clifford Barger Award honors an American Physiological Society (APS) member who has demonstrated leadership, guidance, and mentorship of underrepresented students. The award recognizes mentoring as a highly valued professional activity that merits a high-level award by the Society and acknowledges members who mentor trainees from a diverse and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Eligibility
The award is nomination only. Self-nominations are not permitted. The nominee must:
- Be an APS member for two consecutive years.
- Be a full-time, permanent faculty or staff member at a US institution. Tenure is not required.
- Show a commitment to the career goals and professional development of their mentee(s) through life coaching and providing continued interest in mentees' professional development.
- Be a successful leader in their field (e.g., scholarly productivity or funding, managing, or teaching and mentoring graduate students and postdocs engaged in research etc.).
Preference will be given to those who have not won other APS mentoring awards.
Criteria
The nomination package includes:
- A nomination letter summarizing the actions that form the basis for the nomination.
- Biosketch.
- A list of past and current mentees from underrepresented groups, including scholars’ outcome.
- Letters of support representative of the ways the nominee has demonstrated effort, results and commitment.
The extraordinary commitment of the nominee will be demonstrated by:
- Serving as an outstanding role model in promoting underrepresented groups in the field of physiological sciences.
- Dedication and commitment to excellence in training and mentoring physiologists at graduate, postdoctoral or junior faculty levels.
- Preparing underrepresented students to be contributors to the field of physiology.
- Outreach to the community to recruit and retain young physiologists.
- Continued efforts to seek funding to support recruitment, training and retention of underrepresented trainees.
Selection and Award
Contingent upon funding, this award is sponsored by the APS and administered by the Awards Committee. One awardee would be selected per year according to the rubric below.
For specific role modeling and mentoring activities:
- Role model characteristics as highlighted by mentees.
- Description of the mentoring program.
- Evidence of successful research outcomes for mentees.
- Continued professional involvement with the mentees.
- Local/national/international outreach to recruit mentees.
For success in the mentor's field of interest:
- Publications.
- Research funding.
- Teaching awards.
- Evidence that the mentor is a mentor throughout the mentee's career.

Award amount: $1,000 honorarium, plus up to $1,500 in travel reimbursement to attend the American Physiology Summit
