Award Description
The American Physiological Society (APS) Neural Control & Autonomic Regulation (NCAR) Section Research Recognition Awards recognize outstanding research by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who present a first author abstract at the American Physiology Summit.
Eligibility
The applicant must:
- Be a current APS member.
- Be a graduate student or a postdoctoral fellow/medical resident.
- Submit a first-author abstract to the American Physiology Summit to a NCAR Section Topic Category.
The applicant may only apply to the section to which their abstract was submitted.
Criteria
The applicant package includes:
- PDF of first-author abstract submitted to an NCAR topic at the Summit. Please note that abstracts submitted to non-NCAR topic categories are not eligible.
- The abstract number and first author's full name, sponsor or advisor's full name and email address.
- Letter from the applicant and co-signed by the primary research mentor stating their eligibility for the award, specific role or \contribution to the research, significance of the research in the abstract, statement of applicant's research goals, and rationale for nomination or evidence supporting applicant’s merit for the award.
- Biosketch (National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).

Review Criteria
Applications will be reviewed for the following:
Abstract
- Clearly stated hypothesis or aim.
- Methods or technical approach.
- Pertinent results obtained with quantitative and statistical comparisons, when appropriate.
- Clearly stated conclusion.
- Significance of the results to the field.
Applicant Statement:
- Their role in research described in the abstract.
- Statement of their research goals.
- Evidence supporting their merit and distinction for the award.
Applications with excess or incomplete materials, such as a lack of a signed letter or additional mentor letters, will not be considered.
Awardees may receive this award once as a graduate student and once as a postdoctoral fellow, regardless of section affiliation. Applicants may apply to as many awards as they are eligible for, however, recipients may only accept one abstract-based award for the Summit. The awardee will present their abstract at the NCAR Trainee Awards Session (oral and poster sessions) at the Summit. Attendance at the Summit and NCAR Section Reception and Business Meeting is required to receive the award.
