Award Description
The American Physiological Society (APS) Charlie Bates Research Award was established in 2022 by the Bates family to honor their son Charles Bates. The Bates family is committed to equality and social justice, and they have established this abstract- based award for a scientist who identifies as LGBTQ+. The award will be given to the most meritorious abstract submitted to the American Physiology Summit. The awardee must attend the American Physiology Summit.
The award will be presented annually. The award recipient will receive:
- $1,000 honorarium
- complimentary early registration to attend the American Physiology Summit;
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be an APS member in good standing
- identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community
- have submitted an abstract to the APS annual meeting
Criteria
Applications must be submitted using the APS Awards site by the deadline. The application package includes:
- a copy of the abstract(s) submitted to the Summit (more than one abstract can be submitted),
- a CV describing scholarship, research, teaching, mentoring and service,
- a brief, one-page (250 word) summary of the applicant's service (if any) to the LGBTQIA+ community
Final selection of the award recipient will be made by the APS Awards Committee.
