Award Description

The American Physiological Society (APS) Charlie Bates Research Award was established in 2022 by the Bates family to honor their son, Charles Bates. The Bates family is committed to equality and social justice, and they have established this abstract-based award for a scientist who identifies as LGBTQ+ or is a demonstrated ally of the LGBTQ+ community. The award recognizes an outstanding abstract submitted to the American Physiology Summit. The awardee must attend the Summit. The award cannot be delayed and is contingent upon funding.    

The award will be presented annually. The award recipient will receive:

  • $1,000 honorarium
  • Complimentary early registration to attend the American Physiology Summit. 
Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • Be an APS member in good standing.
  • Identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community or be a demonstrated ally* of the community.
  • Have submitted an abstract to the APS annual meeting.

*An LGBTQ+ demonstrated ally is an individual who consistently shows meaningful support for LGBTQ+ community through action, advocacy and inclusive practices. This could include:

  • Engaging in research that directly benefits the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Mentoring LGBTQ+ scientists.
  • Fostering inclusive and affirming environments in the workplace or community where LGBTQ+ people feel seen, respected and safe.
  • Using their voice, role or position to promote LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion in their workplace, community or the field.
  • Using their influence, skills or resources to challenge discrimination and foster understanding.

Criteria

The application package includes:

  • A copy of the abstract(s) submitted to the Summit (more than one abstract can be submitted).
  • A CV describing scholarship, research, teaching, mentoring and service.
  • A brief, one-page (250 word) summary of the applicant's service (if any) to the LGBTQIA+ community.
