Award Description

The Julius H. Comroe Jr. Distinguished Lectureship of the APS Respiration Section is awarded to an outstanding contributor to the disciplinary areas of physiology represented by the Respiration Section. The recipient is selected by the Section for their exceptional contributions within the discipline. Lecturers must also have a strong record of service to APS and to the Section. 

About Julius H. Comroe Jr.

Julius H. Comroe Jr., MD (1911-1984), was a surgeon, medical researcher, author and educator described as an award-winning expert on the functions and physiology of the human heart and lungs. He made foundational contributions to respiratory physiology by developing many of the pulmonary function tests still used today and investigating reflex control of breathing, breathing patterns, and the effects of drugs and oxygen

Eligibility

The nominee must:

  • Be a regular APS member. 
  • Have made a novel contribution to respiratory physiology in the fields of lung biology, the control of breathing or another respiration-related area.  
  • Demonstrate a strong record of service to the Respiration Section and the Society.
Criteria

This award is by nomination only. Self-nomination is not permitted. The nomination package consist of:

  • Nomination letter which describes the nominee's accomplishments.
  • Three relevant publications. 
  • Description of the nominee's service history.

Materials in excess will be excluded from evaluation. This award is based on nominations by the membership. The recipient is selected by members of the Respiration Section Steering Committee.   


Award at a Glance

Award amount: $1,000 plus up to $2,000 for travel expense reimbursement, reimbursement of the early registration to the American Physiology Summit and a complimentary ticket to the Respiration Section banquet.
