Award Description

The Gastrointestinal & Liver (GIL) Physiology Section Research Recognition Awards recognize outstanding research by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who present a first-author abstract at the American Physiology Summit.  

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • Be a current APS member.
  • Be a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow/medical resident. 
  • Submit a first-author abstract to the Summit.

Applicants may only apply to the section to which their abstract was submitted. Applicants may apply to the Gastrointestinal & Liver Section Research Recognition Award each year if not selected. However, the award can only be accepted once during each trainee period (graduate student or postdoctoral). Applicants may apply to as many section awards as they are eligible for, however, recipients may only accept one Section abstract-based award for the Summit. 

Criteria

The application package includes:

  • PDF of the abstract submitted to the Gastrointestinal & Liver topic category.
  • One-page statement to indicate the applicant's contribution to the research, the broader importance of the research and the applicant's research goals. This statement should be written by the trainee and signed by the mentor.  
  • Biosketch (National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).

  • 0.8-inch margins
  • 11 point font
  • Single-spaced 
Review Criteria 

Applications are reviewed by APS GIL Section Award Committee and judged on the following: 

Abstract

  • Clearly stated hypothesis or aim.
  • Technical approach/methods to the study. 
  • Pertinent results obtained with quantitative and statistical comparisons, when appropriate.
  • Clearly stated conclusion. 
  • Significance of the results to the field.

Other

  • One-page statement from the applicant (see elements to include above). 
  • Biosketch.

Applications with excess or incomplete materials will not be considered.

Award at a Glance

Award amount: $500, plus reimbursement of early registration fees to the American Physiology Summit, and complimentary admission to the Section banquet dinner.
