Award Description
The Arthur C. Guyton Award recognizes independent investigators who conduct research using quantitative and integrative approaches, including feedback controls systems theory.

Eligibility
The applicant must:
- Have been an APS member for at least two consecutive years.
- Hold the rank no higher than assistant professor or equivalent.
- U.S. residency is not required.
Application Requirements
A complete application must include:
- A description of the applicant’s current and pending research program (maximum 3 pages), highlighting its relevance to feedback control systems theory in the study of physiological functions and its use of quantitative and integrative approaches.
- A one-page justification explaining how and why the research program aligns with the intent of the award.
- A NIH-style biosketch (maximum 5 pages).
- A list of their current and pending grant support not included in the biosketch.
- Copy of abstract(s) submitted for presentation at the Summit.
- A letter of recommendation from the applicant's department chair administrator or mentor.
- At least one additional letter of support discussing applicant’s research program.
APS members may apply through the APS application portal. The Awards and Honors Committee reviews all applications.

The award recipient must attend the Summit to accept the award. This award is contingent upon funding.
About Arthur C. Guyton
This award was established in 1993 from an anonymous donation to recognize the contributions of Arthur C. Guyton and his interests in feedback control and mathematical modeling of physiological systems. He was a pioneer in applying large-scale systems analysis to create a mathematical model of the entire cardiovascular system. He also wrote the Textbook of Medical Physiology in 1956, writing the first eight editions solo. The comprehensive textbook has likely influenced more medical students than any other physiology textbook.
