Award Description
The Virendra B. Mahesh Award of Excellence in Endocrinology & Metabolism was established to promote the career development of young investigators pursuing research in endocrinology and metabolism physiology research. The award will be presented to an outstanding graduate student or postdoctoral fellow who is a rising star in the fields of endocrinology and metabolism. Candidates will be judged on their academic career and research accomplishments (based on their career stage) and by the research abstract submitted at the American Physiology Summit.
Eligibility
The applicant must:
- Be an APS member in good standing.
- Be first author on an abstract submitted to the Endocrinology & Metabolism Section topic category.
- Submit a PDF of the first-authored abstract.
- Submit a recommendation letter from their mentor describing why the trainee is deserving of the award including their academic career, research and other accomplishments. The letter must state the trainee's role on the research project presented in the abstract and their eligibility for the award.
Previous Virendra B. Mahesh Award recipients are ineligible to apply.
Criteria
The application consists of:
- PDF of the abstract submission.
- Abstract number and author's full name.
- Biosketch (National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).
- Recommendation letter from the applicant's mentor.
The award recipient is expected to:
- Give an oral presentation at the Endocrinology & Metabolism Awardee session at the Summit.
- Attend the Endocrinology & Metabolism Section Business Meeting and Awards Reception.
Applications with excess or incomplete materials, such as additional letters beyond those required or a blank biosketch, will not be evaluated. Attendance at the Summit is required to receive any section abstract-based award.
