Award Description

The American Physiology Summit Trainee Award provides travel support to a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow to present meritorious research at the American Physiology Summit.  This award was established from the generous donations of Neural Control & Autonomic Regulation (NCAR) Section members.

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • be an APS member in good standing with primary affiliation in the NCAR Section;
  • be a graduate student who has completed post-candidacy exams, as certified in the advisor/chair letter; or
  • be a postdoctoral or clinical fellow within five years of degree completion by the date of the award reception. Research focus should be on neural control and autonomic regulation.

Award criteria will be based on current work reflected in the abstract and overall contributions to the field. Awardees will present their abstract at the NCAR Awards Foundational Science oral and poster sessions at the American Physiology Summit, must be present at the meeting to collect the cash prize and will be recognized at the NCAR Section reception and business meeting. Applicants may apply to as many awards as they are eligible for, however, recipients may only accept one abstract-based award for the American Physiology Summit.

Criteria

The application package includes:

  • PDF copy of the first-authored abstract of unpublished work submitted to any appropriate NCAR topic at the American Physiology Summit
  • NCAR-specific biosketch (use only the NCAR biosketch form provided here), written by the applicant, that includes a one-page personal statement summarizing the applicant’s research contributions, a complete list of publications and abstracts (listed separately), any grants, fellowships and awards;
  • letter of recommendation from the applicant's advisor (graduate student, postdoctoral applicants) or department/division head (early-career applicants); and
  • verifiable documentation of the date (month/year) of completion of the post candidacy exam (graduate students), the date (month/year) of completion of the doctoral degree program (postdoctoral applicant) or the date (month/year) of appointment an early-career position.

Additional materials (e.g., inclusion of extra letters beyond the two required letters or curriculum vitae) will be excluded from evaluation.

Award recipients will be selected from the applications submitted to the NCAR Research Recognition Award (RRA). A second application is not required.
