Effective Physiology Teaching: Virtual Training Course

The American Physiological Society (APS) Center for Physiology Education Effective Physiology Teaching course is for early-career participants who are interested in preparing for academic positions that require teaching or are teaching-focused. Participants will be paired with an experienced mentor for individualized advice as they work through the program. 

The summer program runs June 1–October 15, 2025. The deadline for submitting an application is May 23, 2025.

The Effective Physiology Teaching Course activities will include: 

  • attending biweekly virtual workshop sessions to develop effective educator skills, such as writing learning objectives, inclusive teaching, facilitation of active learning and assessment design;
  • participating in biweekly, one-on-one virtual mentoring; and
  • developing an individualized teaching portfolio with application and/or promotion materials for academic teaching-focused positions.

Complete an online application through the APS award site. Once accepted, participants will receive a link to register and pay for the course.

Nonmembers: $1,200

Eligibility

Applicants must be a graduate student, a postdoctoral fellow or an early-career investigator. Participants must be willing to prepare for and receive feedback. All who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply.

Criteria

Applicants should be prepared to answer questions relating to the following topics at the online application site:

  • Do you have teaching experience? Prior teaching experience is not a requirement for participating in this course.
    • If you do have teaching experience, please describe the institution(s), course(s), student populations(s), and your role(s) as an educator. 
    • If you do not have teaching experience, when and where would you like to begin teaching? Have you participated in other teaching professional development opportunities?
  • What are your primary career goals? If these goals include working at a specific type of institution or aspiring to a particular type of position, please include that information here.

  • Reflect on your own learning experience. Describe a time when you experienced effective teaching. What made it effective?

Applicants will also be asked to upload a current curriculum vitae and provide a letter of support from your direct supervisor (e.g., principal investigator, chair) to demonstrate support for the time required for this course.
