Rules for Abstract Submission

At the time of abstract submission, the study should not have been previously published verbatim as a scientific article or meeting abstract. Interim research products, including manuscripts deposited to preprint servers, are eligible for abstract submission

The abstract may not be presented verbatim at another meeting prior to the scheduled American Physiology Summit presentation. It is acceptable to present a study which represents significant, further progress of a previously presented or published study.

Every abstract must contain the following components:

  • a sentence stating the study objective, unless given in the title;
  • a hypothesis;
  • a brief statement of methods, if pertinent;
  • data;
  • a summary of the results;
  • a statement of the conclusions—stating “the results will be discussed” is not sufficient; and
  • disclosure of funding sources (e.g., commercial, public or private foundation grants).
  • Use standard abbreviations for units of measure. Other abbreviations should be fully spelled out on first mention followed by the abbreviation in parentheses (e.g., milligrams (mg)).
  • Abstracts must be written in English.
  • The submitting author must be listed as an author in the abstract.
  • The first author is expected to present the abstract.

By submitting the abstract, the submitter certifies on behalf of all authors that:

  • the work described complies with all guiding policies and principles endorsed by the American Physiological Society (APS);
  • each author listed on the abstract must have contributed to the study; and
  • each author consents to be listed in informational and promotional materials including the online program and mobile app.
  • Revising or withdrawing an abstract after submission will incur a fee and is subject to the revision or withdrawal policies and deadlines.
  • Authors may present and serve as author on multiple abstracts.
  • Authors’ names should be entered as they appear in the APS membership roster or in scientific publications.
  • Abstracts must conform to applicable APS policies.
  • Abstracts must adhere to the APS Ethics Policy on Experimental Involving Animals or Humans:
  • Disclose real or perceived conflicts of interest.
  • All research presented at the Summit is embargoed until the start of the meeting.
  • Abstract submission requires a nonrefundable handling fee payable by credit card only. Purchase orders and bank transfers are not accepted.
  • All abstract presenters must register and attend the Summit where they plan to present. Failure to register will result in the withdrawal of the abstract for presentation and publication in the journal Physiology.
  • Only approved abstracts will be scheduled for presentation and publication. APS, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to decline abstracts regarded as inappropriate.
  • All accepted abstracts, including tables and images where applicable, will be published in the journal Physiology.

Rules for Abstract Presentation
  • The work presented at the Summit must be substantively identical to that described in the abstract including title, authorship and scientific content.

  • Present efforts to ensure transparency, rigor, and reproducibility of the research.

  • When relevant state the sex of experimental subjects and whether sex differences were assessed.

  • State efforts to ensure scientific rigor and bias reduction including blinding, statistics, sample sizes, and replication. Report which controls were used.

  • Present sufficient raw data for others to evaluate the quality of experiments. Define error bars when used.

  • Refer to the Presenter Resources on the APS Summit website for presentation tips, templates and information about equipment required and provided.

  • The APS Program Working Group reserves the right to reject any abstract that has not complied with the aforementioned rules.
