Abstract Submission Instructions

Read the submission instructions before you begin, you may want to print them for reference as you submit.

Do not submit your abstract more than once.

Abstract Topics

Topic Categories/Keywords

  • Your selected topic determines which reviewer receives and scores your abstract.
  • Review the topic groups and subcategories before submitting your abstract.
Electronic Submission Process and Payment

Electronic Submissions Only

  • All abstracts must be submitted electronically.
  • Review the Abstract Submission Rules carefully before submitting.
  • Use the most recent versions of Chrome, Edge or Safari web browsers.

Account Creation

  • Login using your APS membership credentials.
  • If you are not an APS member, create an account following the on-screen prompts.

Payment

  • Abstract submission fee is payable by credit card only at the time of submission. Your card will be charged immediately following the submission.
  • Purchase orders are not accepted for abstract payment.
  • The nonrefundable abstract processing fee does not include registration. 
  • The first/presenting author must register and attend the American Physiology Summit. Abstracts not presented at the Summit will not be published in the journal Physiology.

Abstract Preparation

  • Prepare your abstract in Microsoft Word or a plain text document.
  • Have the names and institutions of all co‐authors readily available.
  • Have your credit card number ready to pay the nonrefundable submission fee.
  • Be certain your abstract includes all the necessary elements:
    • study objective,
    • hypothesis,
    • methodology,
    • data,
    • summary of results,
    • conclusions, and
    • funding sources.
Author and Presenter Details

First Author Is Presenter

  • The first author is the abstract presenter.
  • If you change the presenting author, that individual will move to the first author slot.

Listing Abstract Authors

  • Ensure that all authors who contributed to the work are included.
  • Authors’ names should be entered as they appear in the APS membership roster or in scientific publications.
  • Abstracts must be written in English.
  • Use standard abbreviations for units of measure. Other abbreviations should be fully spelled out on first mention followed by the abbreviation in parentheses (e.g., milligrams (mg)). Exceptions: DNA, RNA, etc.
  • Trainees should confirm with advisors that the authors’ names and author order are complete and correct.
  • Change the order of the authors or removing authors after the submission deadline will incur a revision fee and requires the approval of all authors.

Authoring Multiple Abstracts

  • Authors may present and serve as author on multiple abstracts.
  • You may be first author and present more than one volunteered scientific paper as long as each submission represents distinct research.
Abstract Title and Body Content

Abstract Title

  • Enter the title of your abstract in sentence case (i.e., capitalize only the first letter of the first word with the exception of proper nouns).  Do not place a period following the abstract title.

Abstract Body

Cut and paste as plain text the body of your abstract into the “Abstract Body” area of the form.

  • Every abstract must contain the following components:
    • a sentence stating the study objective, unless given in the title;
    • a hypothesis;
    • a brief statement of methods, if pertinent;
    • data;
    • a summary of the results;
    • a statement of the conclusions—stating “the results will be discussed” is not sufficient; and
    • disclosure of funding sources (e.g., commercial, public or private foundation grants). Include the source of research support in the separate textbox on the submission form.
  • You will have an opportunity to proofread the complete abstract before submitting the final version. Proofread your abstract carefully to ensure all special characters or fonts (italics, super-/subscript, Greek letters, etc.) present correctly.
  • Enter at least 100 characters, but do not exceed 3200 characters. Character count includes the entire abstract, abstract title, authors, affiliations and abstract body.
  • Use title case for trade names.
  • Do not enter the title or authors again in the abstract body. The title, author and co‐authors will automatically be included in the final abstract.
  • Acknowledge and accept the Author Agreement. Please read the agreement prior to submitting an abstract.
Revisions and Withdrawals

Abstract Revisions

  • Review the Abstract Revision Policy for details and fees.
  • Acknowledge that you have proofread the abstract before final submission.
  • Co-authors will be notified and have seven (7) days to dispute the revision.
  • Abstracts are published in the online journal Physiology, unedited.
  • Revisions made after the abstract submission deadline incur a processing fee.

Abstract Withdrawals

  • Review the Abstract Withdrawals Policy for details and fees.
  • Withdrawals made after the submission deadline incur a processing fee. 
  • Co-authors will be notified and have seven (7) days to dispute the withdrawal.
  • The abstract submission fee is non‐refundable.
