Content Governance
Two programming governance groups will be established to determine the scientific content of the American Physiological Society (APS) annual meeting: the Physiology Summit Leadership Committee (PSLC) and the Program Working Group (PWG).
PHYSIOLOGY SUMMIT LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE
The PSLC is a strategic group that broadly directs the overall content of the annual meeting and works closely with the PWG.
The PSLC will work with the PWG to define high-level programming themes to broadly organize the meeting content. The PSLC will select the invited speakers and moderators for general sessions and game changer sessions. The PSLC should construct session topics of broad interest. Programming should consider effectiveness of virtual versus in-person presentations. Session content ideas should be solicited from:
- PSLC members,
- PWG members,
- APS journals’ editorial board members,
- APS committee members, and
- members at large.
The online submission format is designed to facilitate broad participation. Speaker and moderator selection should apply diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles to consider career stage, race, color and gender. The PSLC should evaluate the success of session content and structure from the previous annual meeting to guide the development of an engaging meeting with high quality scientific content that broadly serves APS members.
- APS President-elect (Chair)
- APS President
- Presidential-appointed eight at-large members (two-year term)
- four members in their first year appointed by current APS President
- four members in their second year appointed by past APS President
- Six members appointed from Section Advisory Committee (SAC) to balance representation across fields (two-year term)
- three in their first year
- three in their second year
- Chair of the PWG (three-year term)
- At-large member appointed by the editors of the APS journal Function
Committee members should include established investigators who are APS members. Representation should balance expertise across APS sections and consider career stage, race, color and gender. The Function-appointed member is not required to be an APS member, although it is preferred. Member appointments should consider international members.
PROGRAM WORKING GROUP
The PWG is a strategic group that directs the development of member-submitted scientific programming. The PWG represents APS sections and interest groups with committee members holding three-year terms.
The PWG will work with the PSLC to define high-level programming themes to broadly organize the meeting content. The PWG will identify cross sectional tracks/themes that will be used to guide the session submission process. The PWG will schedule cross disciplinary/thematic and section- and interest group-specific sessions for the concurrent Foundational Science sessions. The PWG evaluates, approves and schedules volunteered abstract submissions, including late breaking and emerging content. Session content ideas should be solicited from PWG committee members, APS sections, APS interest groups, APS journals, APS committees and members at large, with an online submission format to facilitate broad participation. Programming should consider effectiveness of virtual versus in-person presentations. The PWG should evaluate the success of content and session structure from the previous annual meeting to guide the development of an engaging annual meeting with high quality scientific content that broadly serves APS members.
- PWG chair (selected by the APS executive cabinet)
- The chair of each APS section and interest group's Section Program Committee (SPC) is a voting member.
- Each of the APS interest groups will designate one committee member
- The SAC chair is an ex officio member without a vote.
- PWG members will vote to select the Foundational Science cross sectional/thematic sessions.
- Each APS section is allotted a maximum of three section-organized Foundational Science session slots.
- Each APS Interest Group is allotted a maximum of one interest group-organized Foundational Science session slot.
- Abstract submission will collect information on gender, race and career status on a voluntary basis for consideration of DEI principles for programming.
- All abstracts will be reviewed and scored for scientific excellence.
- Highest scored abstracts will be considered for oral presentation.
- Late breaking content should be limited to new and exciting discoveries.
- The PWG should consider innovative programming ideas to integrate virtual and in-person content.
Committee members and abstract graders should include both established and early-career APS members, considering race, color and gender. Speaker and moderator selection should apply DEI principles to consider career stage, race, color and gender.
