Considerations for Reproducibility in Designing Animal Experiments

April 20, 2023
12 p.m. PDT
Long Beach Convention Center, Room 103

Reproducibility is a key characteristic of a well-designed experiment. It is particularly important—and can be especially difficult to achieve - for experiments that use animals. Yet these studies are crucial for deepening our understanding of biological systems and for developing new therapies for use in both veterinary and patient settings.

A 2021 National Institutes of Health report evaluated current challenges in rigor, transparency, and translatability in animal research. The report provided several recommendations such as: improving study design and planning; increasing statistical awareness of researchers; ensuring that researchers are selecting the appropriate animal model; and better reporting and control of extrinsic factors such as feed, housing, and climate.

The goal of this session is to help researchers identify potential pitfalls and confounding factors in designing animal studies, and to discuss additional challenges that affect their reproducibility.

Speakers Keisa W. Mathis, PhD, Brianna N. Gaskill, PhD, and Gaylen L. Edwards, DVM, PhD, will explore ways to improve experimental design and discuss how changes in science culture can help avoid bias and improve translatability of results.

Navigating Educational Research—A Center for Physiology Education Workshop

April 20, 2023
1:30 p.m. PDT
Long Beach Convention Center, Room TBD

The physiology classroom and teaching laboratories are excellent environments for the types of educational research that can lead to scholarly activity. This introductory workshop will explore the sequence of actions required to initiate and develop educational research projects and to carry them through to peer-reviewed publication. NOTE: Pre-registration for this workshop is required.
