There are three awards being offered for the 2022 APS Institute on Teaching and Learning (ITL).

Abstract-based Trainee Travel Awards for Postdoctoral and Graduate Students

To encourage the participation of young scientists in training, a cash prize and certificate will be granted to trainees for best abstract submission.

Award applicants will be judged prior to and during the conference. Awardees will be announced during the final session on Friday, June 24, where they will receive recognition from the conference organizers. The certificate and cash award will follow after the conference.

Martin Frank Diversity Travel Award

APS offers travel awards for those who traditionally have been underrepresented in science to attend the 2022 ITL.

The Martin Frank Diversity Travel Awards—formerly known as the APS Minority Travel Fellowship Awards—are designed to increase active participation in and networking at APS scientific conferences among trainees and early-career faculty from groups underrepresented in the physiological sciences. Porter Physiology Development Fellows are highly encouraged to apply.

To be considered for an award the candidate must:

  • be a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow or early-career faculty—recently transitioned/within five years of obtaining a PhD—from underrepresented racial or ethnic backgrounds and/or with disabilities. See National Institutes of Health guidelines for these categories,
  • attend a U.S. institution and conduct research within the 50 states or U.S. territories,
  • submit an abstract for the conference via the online abstract submission site,
  • be the first author on the abstract,
  • be the presenting author,
  • indicate during the abstract submission process you would like to be considered for the Martin Frank Diversity Travel Awards, and
  • complete a separate award application through the APS awards portal. A link will be provided in the submission site after you have finalized and submitted your abstract.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Awardees will receive registration reimbursement to attend the conference.

Submission deadline: EXTENDED to Friday, April 22, 2022
