The Integrative Physiology & Pharmacology (IPP) program at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, excels at training students in a broad range of research areas and approaches from molecular to human studies, while providing a solid foundation in the fundamentals of physiology and pharmacology. Students undertake innovative research projects in a collegial and collaborative environment that features state-of-the-art equipment and resources. Our students are prepared for careers in science, including: academia, industry, regulatory science and more. Our nationally recognized National Institutes of Health-funded research centers provide research opportunities for students.

The IPP program has a multifaceted approach to training students that emphasizes:

  • translational research and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Curriculum

The program provides comprehensive training in both physiology and pharmacology through customized curriculum to help students attain their individual career goals. Foundational principles are conveyed through didactic courses on presentation skills, acquisition of grant funding, scientific literature analysis and ethically and responsible practices.

A PhD in Integrative Physiology and Pharmacology is ideal for careers that require a strong foundation in these disciplines, including:

  • academic research and instruction,
  • pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries,
  • professional schools, and
  • regulatory agencies.

A joint degree with Wake Forest University School of Business (PhD/MBA) is also available and dedicated to training and research at the interface between science and business.

Graduate Research

Wake Forest School of Medicine is a home to many academic and research centers with translational research opportunities for students in the following major areas:

  • drug and alcohol use disorders,
  • cardiovascular physiology and hypertension,
  • regenerative medicine,
  • neuro- and behavioral pharmacology,
  • lifespan physiology,
