This letter was sent to the 14 senators who co-signed a letter sent to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget requesting the full implementation of Fiscal Year 2025 funding for the National Institutes of Health.

August 18, 2025

Dear Senator:

The American Physiological Society (APS) thanks you for supporting U.S. biomedical research by sending a message to the Office of Management and Budget requesting the full implementation of Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is an important step in continuing life-saving research and preserving U.S. leadership in science.

As you know, the biomedical research community has faced growing concern about the future of research funding. During the past several months, grant cancellations, funding freezes, and other delays in disbursement of funds have disrupted ongoing projects and undermined researchers' ability to make decisions about hiring staff or taking on new trainees. Strong leadership from Congress is needed to restore confidence in the NIH as America's cornerstone biomedical research agency.

Over the past two decades, bipartisan support from Congress has delivered predictable and sustainable growth of the NIH budget, allowing the biomedical research ecosystem to thrive. This investment provides jobs and training opportunities in every state, and the cutting-edge research supported by NIH provides the foundational knowledge that drives new treatments and cures.

Thank you again for standing up for biomedical research. APS appreciates your acknowledgement of the importance of NIH-funded research and the life-saving cures that depend on it.
