The APS Renal Section is a collaborative community for all scientists at all career levels who are interested in:

  • the kidney.
  • the urinary tract.
  • the cells and vasculature that make up these structures.
  • the control of body fluid volume.
  • electrolyte composition, including acid-base homeostasis.

Research may involve human or animal models, individual cell types and isolated membrane systems, using a wide range of cross-disciplinary approaches to the study of function in these systems, such as:

  • biochemistry.
  • immunology.
  • genetics.
  • mathematical modeling.
  • cell and molecular biology.
  • solute transport.
  • other physiological methodologies.

Join us at the American Physiology Summit for our trainee event “Posters & Professors,” our annual Renal Dinner and the opportunity to engage with other renal physiologists.

APS members can log into their My APS Dashboard and Renal Section Hub for member-only content.

Michelle Gumz

"I joined the American Physiological Society (APS) as a postdoctoral fellow new to the field of physiology and quickly found a professional home in the Renal Section. APS has played a pivotal role in my career development—offering opportunities to present my research at conferences, receive early-career recognition, and take on leadership roles as I advanced in academia.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey has been mentoring trainees and bringing them to APS meetings, where they have found a sense of belonging in the Renal Section. I’m passionate about fostering a supportive scientific community and am committed to continuing our section’s tradition of serving renal physiologists from all backgrounds and career stages."
