Award Description
The John S. Fordtran Gastrointestinal & Liver (GIL) Section Distinguished Research Award recognizes an outstanding investigator with international recognition for their contributions to research in areas represented by the Section. This award was formerly known as the Gastrointestinal & Liver Section Distinguished Research Lecture.
Eligibility
The nominee must:
- Be an established APS member (professor rank or equivalent).
- Have contributed to gastrointestinal and liver physiology research.
Past nominees are eligible to be considered, but individuals can only receive the John S. Fordtran Distinguished Research Award once.
Criteria
Self-nominations are not allowed. The nomination package includes:
- Nominee's curriculum vitae.
- Nomination letter.
Applications with excess or incomplete materials will not be considered. Candidates for this award are judged based on their curriculum vitae, including funding, publication record and service to APS and the quality of the content of a nomination letter.
The awardee will be recognized at the GIL Section Banquet and Business Meeting at the American Physiology Summit and expected to deliver an after-dinner talk at the following year’s Summit.

Award at a Glance
Award amount: $1,000, plus reimbursement of the early registration fee to the American Physiology Summit, and complimentary admission to the GIL Section banquet.
