Award Description

The American Physiological Society (APS) Endocrinology & Metabolism (E&M) Research Recognition Awards recognize outstanding research by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who present a first-author abstract at the American Physiology Summit.  

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • Be a current APS member.
  • Be a graduate student or a postdoctoral fellow/medical resident.  
  • Submit a first-author abstract to the Summit under an E&M Section topic category. 
Criteria

The applicant package includes:

  • PDF of the abstract.
  • Abstract number and first author's full name, sponsor or advisor's full name and email address. 
  • Letter from the applicant and co-signed by the primary research mentor stating their eligibility for the award, contribution to the research, significance of the research in the abstract and statement of applicant's research goals.  
  • Biosketch (National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).

Letter/statement format:

  • PDF of the abstract
  • 0.8-inch margins
  • 11-point font
  • single spaced

Award recipients may receive an award once as a graduate student and once as a postdoctoral fellow, regardless of section affiliation. Applicants may apply to as many awards as they are eligible for, however, recipients may only accept one abstract-based award for the Summit. 

Review Criteria

Applications will be reviewed for the following:

 

Abstract

  • Clearly stated hypothesis or aim.
  • Technical approach and statistical analysis.  
  • Results reporting. 
  • Appropriate conclusion and significance.

Other

  • Letter from the applicant (see elements to include above). 
  • Biosketch.

Applications with excess or incomplete materials, such as additional letters beyond those required or a blank curriculum vitae, will not be evaluated. Attendance at the Summit is required to receive any section abstract-based award.
