William Galey Scholarship Award

Award Description

The Teaching of Physiology Section William Galey Scholarship Award provides professional development funds for up to three graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, early- or mid-career faculty newly transitioning into a teaching career to either: 

• Attend the Center for Physiology Education’s From Concept to Classroom (C2C) pre-conference workshop prior to the American Physiology Summit, or 
• Participate in the Effective Physiology Teaching virtual training course. 

The award is given in memory of William Galey, PhD, to honor of his commitment to the teaching and professional development of trainees in physiology.

Award Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the quality, completeness and relevance of the submitted materials, and how effectively they demonstrate alignment with the award’s purpose and objectives.

Eligibility 

Applicants must: 

• Be an APS member in good standing with the Teaching of Physiology Section as their primary affiliation.   
• Be a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, early- or mid-career faculty transitioning into a teaching career. 
• Attend either the From Concept to Classroom pre-conference workshop or the Effective Physiology Teaching virtual training course.

Application Requirements 

A complete application must include:

• A one-page letter of intent that includes the applicant’s career goals and how this award will benefit their professional development and training. 
• A curriculum vitae.  
• One letter of support from the applicant’s mentor, principal investigator, advisor or department chair familiar with their career goals, which includes a statement on how the chosen professional development program will benefit their training and career plans.

Note that there are separate options within the application to select the workshop or virtual course.

The Teaching of Physiology Section Awards Committee selects up to three recipients each year.

Conditions of the Award

Awardees must participate in the “From Concept to Classroom (C2C)” pre-conference workshop or Effective Physiology Teaching virtual training course and attend the Teaching of Physiology Section banquet at the Summit (if attending the C2C pre-conference workshop). Recipients are responsible for funding any travel to the Summit.

About William Galey

William R. Galey, PhD, (1943–2014) was a biochemist and educator who rose to full professor at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine and later led its Biomedical Science Graduate Program. His accomplishments included two Fulbright Fellowships, leadership of prestigious Gordon Research Conferences and service as Western Region Director of the Basic Science Education Forum. Following his retirement from UNM, he continued advancing graduate science education through leadership roles at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
