Award Description
The Carl J. Wiggers Award recognizes a Fellow of the Cardiovascular Section whose outstanding career contributions to cardiovascular research and sustained commitment to the Cardiovascular (CV) Section strengthen the section and help attract exceptional new members.
Award Criteria
Nominations will be evaluated based on the quality, completeness and relevance of the submitted materials, as well as how effectively they demonstrate alignment with the award’s purpose and objectives.
The Carl J. Wiggers award is presented to a scientist who is a Fellow of the APS CV Section and has made outstanding contributions to cardiovascular research throughout their career, has been an active and committed member of the section and who will attract outstanding new members to the section from the U.S. and abroad.
Eligibility
Nominees must:
- Be an APS member in good standing with the CV Section as their primary affiliation.
- Be a Fellow of the Cardiovascular Section.
- Show demonstrated commitment to the CV Section and APS.
Nomination Requirements
A complete nomination must include:
- The nominee’s curriculum vitae, including descriptions of the nominee’s significant contributions to cardiovascular research.
- Two letters of recommendation; one from a current or former trainee of the nominee and a second from an individual selected by the nominator.
The Cardiovascular Section Nominating Committee selects one recipient each year.
Conditions of the Award
The awardee must accept the award at the Summit and attend the CV Section banquet.
Nominators are responsible for confirming that the nominee can attend the Summit. The awardee and nominees are responsible for funding their own travel.
About Carl J. Wiggers
Carl J. Wiggers’ (1883-1963) research defined fundamental pressure-flow relationships in the cardiovascular system. In addition to publishing definitive texts in circulatory physiology, Wiggers founded the journal Circulation Research and trained numerous future department heads and several APS presidents.
