AI Unbound: Challenging Scientific Boundaries in Physiology Research and Data Science

This session, chaired by Stephanie Abo, PhD, and Carrie A. Northcott, PhD, will discuss how advances in technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning are pushing boundaries in science and health care like never before. Experts will discuss the effects of these tools on physiology research including opportunities, challenges and their nascent work in these exciting and evolving research areas.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Danielle Cherrice Loving received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and is a doctoral student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on developing novel modularized approaches to chemical synthesis, which can be integrated with AI-enabled democratized drug discovery efforts.

University of Illinois at Chicago

Niranjan Karnik, MD, PhD, is a professor of psychiatry, director of the Institute for Juvenile Research and co-director of Digital Mental Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He also serves as director of the Great Lakes Node of the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network. Karnik’s research focuses on data science, technology, and community-based interventions for vulnerable populations with psychiatric and substance use disorders.

University of Rochester Medical Center, New York

Ray Dorsey, MD, is the David M. Levy Professor of Neurology and director of the Center for Health + Technology at the University of Rochester in New York. Dorsey’s work focuses on the use of novel technologies to improve care and expedite research for those with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological diseases.
