Title: Navigating Educational Research

The physiology classroom and teaching laboratories are excellent environments for the types of educational research that can lead to scholarly activity. This introductory workshop will explore the sequence of actions required to initiate and develop educational research projects and to carry them through to peer-reviewed publication. An overview presentation will provide the conceptual framework for educational research. Participants will be able to choose between two of three breakout topics:
- Experimental Design/Data Analysis,
- Navigating Educational IRBs, and
- Publishing in Educational Research.
Each breakout topic will be facilitated by experts and will be focused on the participant’s projects. The session will conclude with strategies for managing and bringing an educational research project to publication. Participants will enhance their personal educational research skills and develop a network of colleagues to support their educational research activities.
Note: This session is an in-person event that will be held as a pre-Summit event on Thursday April 20, 2023. All attendees must be registered for the Summit to attend this session.
Keynote Speaker
Mary Pat Wenderoth, PhD, is a teaching professor emerita in the Department of Biology at the University of Washington. She has taught animal physiology courses and
conducts biology education research on use of first principles in guiding students’ mechanistic reasoning in physiology. Wenderoth also researches academic achievement gaps in STEM and the effectiveness of professional development efforts to
close those gaps. She is a co-founder of the national Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research.
