How to Get Started in Science Advocacy and Why You Should

April 4, 2024
12-1:30 p.m.
Long Beach Convention Center, Room 103

Whether it's advocating for increased research funding, advancing evidence-based policies to address public health challenges, or building strategies to support a robust and diverse scientific workforce, it is essential that scientists are part of the conversation. Very few lawmakers have a scientific background, so they need to hear from experts who can explain the critical research they do and how that research is supported through funding agencies. Although scientists are often passionate about their work, most lack the experience to deliver the right message.

There are many ways to get involved in science advocacy, from volunteering a few hours a month to making it a full-time career. This session will offer advice from experienced science advocates about how to effectively champion science and where to find opportunities to create positive change, either through becoming a scientist advocate or by entering a career in science policy. Talks will be followed by a panel discussion offering diverse perspectives and experiences in advocacy.
