Rockville, Md. (Oct, 27, 2025) The American Physiological Society (APS) will assume full publishing operations for Function beginning with the 2026 publication year. The transition marks the journal’s move from its current publishing arrangement with Oxford University Press (OUP) to APS’ in-house Publications Division.

This strategic shift reinforces APS’ commitment to strengthening Function’s position as a leading open-access journal for physiology and to enhancing the publishing experience for authors, reviewers and readers.

“Launched in 2020 in partnership with OUP, Function has quickly become a respected peer-reviewed journal showcasing cutting-edge research and reviews across the full spectrum of physiology,” says Wolfgang Kuebler, MD, FAPS, Chair of the APS Publications Committee. “Bringing the journal home allows us to build on this strong foundation and align the journal more closely with APS’ mission and publishing standards.”

Function will continue to emphasize research that advances the understanding of physiological mechanisms and inform health and disease.

“We are grateful to OUP for its role in helping establish Function within the global research community. Taking over Function operations is an exciting milestone for APS,” said APS Chief Publishing Officer, Colette Bean, MA. “This allows us to more deeply integrate the journal into the Society’s portfolio of journals and further our vision for innovative high-impact physiological publishing.”

APS is committed to ensuring a seamless transition. Manuscript submissions will continue without interruption, and Function will remain fully indexed, discoverable, and accessible. Any questions related to this change can be directed to function@physiology.org.
