The Society expands access to physiology research, making it open to the world.

Rockville, Md.—The American Physiological Society (APS) has achieved its Subscribe to Open (S2O) goal in 2026, making 10 of its primary research journals open to readers worldwide with no article processing charges (APCs) for authors. The achievement reflects continued support from institutional library partners who choose each year to sustain a publishing model that puts science first.

Unlike open access models that rely on article processing charges, S2O depends on continued institutional subscription commitment. When enough subscribing partners maintain their support, APS can open its journals to everyone.

Open Access Benefits for Authors and Institutions

Institutions subscribing to the APS Digital Library receive two assurances whether open access (OA) thresholds are met:

  • Full access to 10 of APS’ primary research journals for all affiliated researchers.
  • Corresponding authors at subscribing institutions can publish open access without APCs in journals through the APS OA guarantee.

“Every year, we have to earn this. Subscribe to Open works because institutions choose to sustain it—because they believe in the trusted rigorous content published in APS journals,” says Colette Bean, MA, chief publishing officer at APS. “That commitment makes it possible for the Society to open its journals to the world while reinvesting every dollar back into the discipline we serve.”

As a nonprofit society publisher, APS reinvests publishing revenue into scientific meetings, awards and fellowships, career development and advocacy efforts that advances the physiological sciences. Institutional participation in S2O directly supports that mission. Learn more about about S2O and all of the APS open access initiatives.
