Paul A. Welling, MD, the Joseph S. and Esther Handler Professor at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, is renowned for research on molecular underpinnings of potassium-sodium balance, electrolyte disorders and hypertension. His work translates genetic insights into new understandings of kidney physiology. Championing a team-science approach, spanning gene discovery to translational studies, Welling currently leads a global collaborative to elucidate why dietary potassium profoundly affects salt metabolism, blood pressure and cardiovascular-kidney disease. Welling is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association of American Physicians. He has served in numerous leadership roles, including two terms as chair of the American Physiological Society Finance Committee.

Statement

The American Physiological Society (APS) has been instrumental in my professional success. The Society has provided a platform for vibrant scientific exchange and career development while offering a welcoming community and deep sense of belonging. As president, I’ll bring an unwavering commitment to ensure that every member benefits similarly.

I am energized by the new APS Strategic Plan, the Center for Physiology Education, the American Physiology Summit and APS’ initiatives promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in science. My candidacy is driven by a genuine desire to ensure their successes, utilizing my consensus-building skills and forward-thinking vision.

Serving two recent terms as Finance Committee Chair, my candidacy brings timely experience. As APS navigates the challenges posed by open access and the uncertain economy, my knowledge and institutional memory will be crucial to developing a sustainable business model. I’m dedicated to securing a thriving fiscal future where APS can continually meet the evolving needs of our diverse membership.

In conclusion, my presidential aspirations are rooted in profound gratitude for the Society's role in my career and a sincere desire to contribute to its growth. With dedication, experience and an inclusive vision, I will lead APS into a future where physiology stands at the forefront of scientific excellence.
