Awards and Honors Committee
PURPOSE: The purpose of the Awards and Honors Committee is to oversee all Society-level awards and recognition programs, recognizing excellence in physiology and service to the community in ways that advance the strategic goals of the Society.
MEETINGS: The committee meets at least once annually. Meetings may be conducted either in person or virtually depending on need.
The committee is composed of at least 12 members of the Society. A FAPS subcommittee will consist of 12 members (one from each section), plus a chair, all of whom must hold the FAPS designation. The Awards and Honors chair is appointed by the Committee on Committees with approval by the APS Board of Directors. The chair also serves on the APS Advisory Council.
- Oversee all Society-level awards and honors to ensure consistency with APS’s strategic goals.
- Oversee the activities of the FAPS subcommittee in reviewing the nomination and selection of Fellows of the American Physiological Society Program.
- Oversee the activities of the awards subcommittees and create new subcommittees as needed to review award applications.
- Select the Research Career Enhancement Awardees, Teaching Career Enhancement Awardees, the Arthur C. Guyton Awards for Excellence in Integrative Physiology Awardee, the Shih Chun Wang Young Investigator Awardee and the Lazaro J. Mandel Young Investigator Awardee.
- Manage the selection process and select the APS Postdoctoral Fellows.
- Select recipients of other awards as directed by the Board.
- Submit an annual report written to the Board at their spring meeting, providing activities from the previous 12 months. The report will be due three weeks ahead of the meeting.
