Regaining weight after losing it is the most significant obstacle to treating obesity. Regular exercise has emerged as one of the most potent strategies for successful weight loss maintenance. Paul MacLean, PhD, from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, will discuss his research on the effects of regular exercise on energy expenditure and nutrient trafficking during weight regain after weight loss through the use of with a Comprehensive Lab Animal Monitoring System (Oxymax®-CLAMS). This system allows for comprehensive phenotyping to establish a picture of how regular exercise affects energy balance, whole body metabolism and the molecular profiles of key metabolic tissues.

Speaker

Paul MacLean, PhDPaul MacLean, PhD, is a professor of medicine and pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, with 25 years of experience studying obesity and its metabolic complications. He is the director of the Colorado Nutrition Obesity Research Center and the director of Research and Education Integration for the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. MacLean’s research interests include the biological drivers of weight regain after weight loss, exercise as a strategy for weight loss maintenance and understanding how obesity affects women’s health across the lifespan, including the relationship between obesity and breast cancer risk. MacLean’s overarching research objective is to translate the wealth of knowledge generated from mechanistic basic science studies of energy balance to clinically relevant concepts and applications in obesity therapeutics.
