Pressure-volume (PV) loops provide a range of hemodynamic parameters which are otherwise not readily measurable. These include changes in contractility, elastance, power, energetics and efficiency through the assessment of both load-dependent and load-independent states. PV loops also bring with them a host of technical considerations and challenges when collecting this valuable data. PV loops also bring with them a host of technical considerations and challenges when collecting this valuable data.

In this presentation, Nick Glover, BS, and Cole McLarty, BMSc, of Transonic Systems, will introduce the next generation of PV loop technology with the ADV550, a system designed to innovate workflow and allow users to position catheters with immediate blood volume feedback. Tim Hacker, PhD, of the University of Wisconsin, Madison will review his immersive and hands-on PV loop surgical workshop that covers all aspects of data collection, from catheterization techniques through data review. The speakers will also discuss a scholarship opportunity aimed at improving training opportunities in the PV loop space and growing the community.

Key learning objectives include:

  • exploring the value of PV loop data for assessing contractility and ventricular remodeling in research,

  • discussing recent advances in PV loop technology,

  • knowing the importance of proper surgical and technical training when performing PV loop data collection, and

  • exploring opportunities for professional development in the PV loop field.

2022 CC Speaker Headshots - Cole McLarty - 200x200Cole McLarty, BMSc, earned degree in physiology and medical sciences from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. His interests lie in the assessment of blood pressure, blood flow, tubing flow and ventricular pressure-volume loops. McLarty’s career is guided by the belief that meaningful research is founded on dependable technology and trustworthy support. Since becoming the director of Sales and Marketing at Transonic Systems, a company specializing in cardiovascular research technology based in Ithaca, New York, he and his team aim to bring the highest level of education and support to all their applications.

2022 CC Speaker Headshots - Nick Glover - 200x200
Nick Glover, BS, is a sales specialist and product manager of pressure and pressure-volume technology in the research division at Transonic Systems, a company specializing in cardiovascular research technology based in Ithaca, New York. After earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, Glover has spent over 10 years working in the life science and medical imaging space. He is driven by collaboration with users and implementation of measurement technologies in novel research applications.

Tim Hacker, PhDTim Hacker, PhD, is a senior scientist and director of the Cardiovascular Physiology and Surgery Core Facility at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work at the Cardiovascular Research Core Lab facility provides researchers with surgical models of disease as well as non-invasive imaging and invasive physiologic monitoring of the disease process. Hacker has established cardiac disease models in mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, dogs and primates. His lab documented the variability in mouse coronary anatomy and was the first lab to publish right ventricular pressure-volume data in mice. Hacker’s work examining defects in the lamin protein has led to a phase I clinical trial to test a drug which slows or even reverses heart failure associated with lamin mutations.
