APS Announces New Leadership for Coming Year
Rockville, Md. (April 28, 2020)—The American Physiological Society (APS) is pleased to announce its new leadership: President Linda C. Samuelson, PhD, FAPS, FAAAS; President-elect Jennifer Pollock, PhD, FAPS, FAHA; and Councilors Michael Hedrick, PhD, FAPS; William F. Jackson, PhD; and Ann Schreihofer, PhD, FAPS. The new officers were elected by APS membership and took office at the end of April.
Linda C. Samuelson, PhD, FAPS, FAAAS, is the John A. Williams Collegiate Professor of Gastrointestinal Physiology and director of the Center for Cell Plasticity and Organ Design at the University of Michigan, where she has worked since 1991. Samuelson earned a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Chicago.
An APS member since 1995, Samuelson has served the Society in multiple roles. She is a former member of APS Council, the Gastrointestinal & Liver Section Steering Committee and is a past chair of the Committee on Committees. Samuelson also served on the Publications and Finance committees and is a past associate editor of Physiological Genomics. She is a current member of the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology editorial board and is the editor-in-chief of APSselect, APS’ monthly collection of the “best of the best” research articles.
Samuelson’s honors include the APS Takeda Distinguished Research Award, Horace W. Davenport Distinguished Lectureship and the American Gastroenterological Association’s Grossman and Funderburg Awards. Samuelson became a Fellow of the APS (FAPS) in 2015 and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2019.
Jennifer Pollock, PhD, FAPS, FAHA, holds an endowed professorship in nephrology in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She is also the co-director of the Department of Cardio-Renal Physiology & Medicine and co-director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences TL1 Predoctoral Training Program at UAB. Pollock earned a doctorate in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Pollock has been an APS member since 1997. Past leadership roles include secretary-treasurer and chair of the Water & Electrolyte Homeostasis Section, member of the Nominating and Section Advisory committees and organizer of multiple conference and symposia programs. She is a past member of the Science Policy Committee and APS Council and contributes to the editorial and peer review processes for the American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology, American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology and American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology.
Her honors include numerous awards for outstanding research and mentoring, the American Heart Association Established Investigator Award and the American Heart Association Harriet Dustan Award for Outstanding Hypertension Research. She has received the APS Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award and the APS Starling Distinguished Lecturer Award. Pollock received FAPS status in 2016 and is a Fellow of the American Heart Association.
Michael Hedrick, PhD, FAPS, is a professor in the Department of Biological Science at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB). He earned his PhD in zoology from the University of British Columbia in Canada. Hedrick is a former department and academic senate chair. An APS member since 1991, Hedrick is a past chair of the Comparative & Evolutionary Physiology Section and has served on the Nominating, Section Advisory and Publications committees. He is on the editorial boards of multiple physiology journals, including the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, and for APSselect.
His honors include appointment as a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences and outstanding professor awards. Hedrick received FAPS status in 2018.
William F. Jackson, PhD, is a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University (MSU). He earned his PhD in physiology from MSU. An APS member since 1978, Jackson has served the Society as a member of the Education, Joint Program and APS Fellows committees and the Committee on Committees. He is the current past chair of the APS Cardiovascular Section and continues to serve on the editorial board of the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology. Jackson is also a longtime reviewer for the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology and the Journal of Applied Physiology.
Jackson is a former president of the Microcirculatory Society and a past editor-in-chief of the journal Microcirculation. Other honors include the Medical College of Georgia’s Outstanding Young Faculty Award, Western Michigan University’s Distinguished Scholar Award and the Microcirculatory Society’s Pharmacia Award.
